Get to Know Your Muscular System

The muscular system along with skeletal system helps in movement for species. The human body contains about 650 muscles attached with skeleton, which helps in movement of the body. There are three kinds of muscle tissues: cardiac, smooth, and skeletal. Each of these tissues helps in body function and motion. The muscle system consists of two kinds of muscles: voluntary and involuntary. The muscle that can be controlled are voluntary and that cannot be controlled are involuntary muscle. The cardiac muscle is an example of an involuntary muscle.

Difference between Male and Female Muscle System

The physiology of both male and female muscular system is the same but the difference in their muscle mass is due to testosterone in males that helps to build muscle faster and bigger than female.

Changes in the Muscular System throughout One’s Life Span

Muscles grow during prenatal period by hyperplasia and hypertrophy. During child birth the muscle mass ranges from 23% to 25% of human body weight. The development in body weight in turn means growth in muscles and they grow in length and diameter. The muscle mass change in adulthood is very minimal. After the age of 50, muscle mass decreases at greater rate and the muscle loss varies with respect to the individual diet and exercise. At very old age, both the length and diameter decreases rapidly.

Information on Muscular Diseases

Muscular diseases is an abnormal condition that includes strain, which ranges from mild to severe, disorder of nervous system, muscular dystrophy, fibromyalgia, myasthenia gravis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The most known muscular dystrophy is Duchenne and Becker dystrophies, which are all genetic disorders. The symptoms are almost the same and they include weakness and disability. Different kinds of dystrophy are Becker, Congenital, Duchenne, Distal, Emery-Dreifuss, Facioscapulohumeral, Limb-Girdle, Myotonic, and Oculopharyngeal. Fibromyalgia is a chronic muscle disease. Myasthenia gravis is an immune disorder that weakens muscles in neck, and face. In ALS, motor neuron dies and voluntary muscle movement stops.

How the Muscular System Work

Muscular system has three important jobs: to make movement, produce heat, and posture. Most of the movements are due to muscular contraction and muscle offer support to the body to maintain posture. Even at rest (sleep), the muscle contracts to maintain muscle tone. Also muscle produces heat as byproduct during any activity to maintain the body temperature.

What are Muscles?

Muscles are fleshy part of the body that helps in movement and they are composed of fibers. Each fiber is composed of bundled long thin cells. These fibers contain protein, namely myosin and actin and every bundle is surrounded by perimysium, a thin skin. Nerves are inside the muscle to carry information and blood vessels are inside to carry energy needed.

What is the strongest Muscle in the Human Body?

It is difficult to find the strongest muscle, because different methods are used to measure strength. With proportional to its size, the tongue is considered to be the strongest muscle. Gluteus maximus is the largest muscle and heart is considered to be the hardest muscle.

Few Tips on Building Strong Muscles and Keeping the Muscular System Healthy

A healthy muscular system can be achieved by regular exercises, which help to control weight, tones muscles, strengthen bones, and improve the quality of life. Aerobic exercises are useful to strengthen lungs and heart. Anaerobic exercises helps in increasing the strength and size of the muscles. Also following the proper diet helps in maintaining healthy muscular system.
